How many times a day should you feed a dog?

Meal frequency is not the daily food allowance
The number of meals describes how often food is offered. It does not calculate how much the dog should eat. The total amount still needs to suit the individual dog's life stage, health, body and muscle condition, activity, current food and response over time.
A packet guide can provide starting information, but it cannot assess the dog in front of you. If the amount is unclear, or weight or condition is changing, ask the veterinary team to set or review the daily target rather than fixing the problem by changing meal count alone.

When should a feeding routine be different?
PDSA's current owner guidance recommends two equal meals from the measured daily allowance as a practical adult routine. It also says some small dogs and puppies may need smaller meals more often, sometimes up to four times a day. That is a possibility to discuss for the individual dog, not a fixed schedule for every puppy or small breed.

Is once-daily feeding healthier?
A large study from the Dog Aging Project is often reduced to that headline. In cross-sectional data, dogs reported as fed once daily had lower average cognitive-dysfunction scores and lower odds of several reported health-condition categories than dogs fed more often. The cognitive analysis included 10,474 dogs and the health-condition analyses included 24,238.
The study also cannot override practical veterinary guidance, a puppy's needs or a prescribed routine. If once-daily feeding currently appears to work, that still does not show it is superior. If two measured meals work, the study is not a reason to remove one.
Does wet food change how often a dog should eat?
Wet food does not create a universal meal frequency. Count its contribution to the whole daily ration and follow the exact product's feeding and storage instructions. If wet and dry are used together, do not add a full daily ration of each. The wet-and-dry portion guide owns that calculation.

A useful routine is one the whole household can carry out consistently. Write down the daily amount and the planned split so that meal count does not drift into extra food.
