Dog food allergy data, with every figure sourced

Food allergy affects roughly 1 to 2% of dogs seen by a vet, and 9 to 50% of dogs already diagnosed with atopic dermatitis. Those are not UK population figures. Every number below states exactly who was counted and links to the study behind it.

What this dataset is, and is not

This is a reference dataset for people who need a traceable figure, not a diagnostic tool or a prevalence estimate for every dog in the UK. The underlying studies are largely international veterinary and referral populations. A percentage without its denominator would make those studies look more certain than they are, so we do not publish one.

These are useful questions. They are not useful answers until the evidence supports a denominator and a source that a reader can check.

Individual percentages for beef, dairy, chicken and wheat

The locked review supports their rank order, but its evidence note explicitly says not to reconstruct further per-food percentages without the full table in front of you. We publish the verified order rather than repeat a number we cannot audit here.

UK-specific food-allergy prevalence

The available figures are from international veterinary and referral populations. We found no UK population-prevalence study to support a UK percentage.

Insect protein as clinically hypoallergenic for confirmed food-allergic dogs

Novel-protein logic is plausible, but no clinical feeding trial in confirmed food-allergic dogs establishes this figure. A possible mechanism is not a dataset value.

A single gastrointestinal-versus-skin symptom split

Published studies use different populations and definitions. We did not find one denominator that makes a single percentage honest enough to publish here.

A fair question

We make dog food too

That is why this dataset distinguishes a documented figure from a commercially convenient one. In particular, it does not claim insect protein is clinically hypoallergenic for confirmed food-allergic dogs because that trial has not been done.
