Walk into any pet shop or search online and you will find dozens of supplements marketed at dogs with allergies. Omega-3 fish oils. Probiotics. Prebiotics. Quercetin. Coconut oil. CBD. Colostrum. The list goes on and on. Some of these have genuine evidence behind them. Others are well-marketed but underwhelming in practice. In years of working with dog owners navigating food allergies, I have seen a lot of money spent on supplements that made no meaningful difference, and a few supplements that genuinely helped. This article cuts through the noise and gives you the evidence-based picture.

The Role of Supplements in Food Allergy Management

Before going through individual supplements, it is worth being clear about what supplements can and cannot do.

Supplements support the management of food allergy symptoms. They do not cure food allergies. The only way to manage a food allergy long-term is to identify and avoid the problem food. Everything else — supplements, medicated shampoos, anti-itch drugs — is about reducing symptoms and supporting the dog's comfort while the diet is managed correctly.

That said, some supplements do meaningfully reduce inflammation, support skin barrier function, and improve quality of life for allergic dogs. They are a legitimate part of a comprehensive management plan, not a substitute for dietary management.

The supplements covered here are those with the best evidence. They are listed in order of the strength of evidence supporting their use.

Supplements with the Best Evidence

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA)

This is the strongest evidence supplement in the list. Omega-3 fatty acids — specifically EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) from fish oil — have the most consistent evidence for reducing inflammation in allergic skin disease in dogs.

The mechanism is well-understood. Omega-3 fatty acids compete with omega-6 fatty acids in cell membranes, reducing the production of inflammatory eicosanoids — the signalling molecules that drive the itching, redness, and inflammation of an allergic reaction. The more EPA and DHA in the cell membranes, the less inflammatory the skin's response to allergens.

Evidence: Multiple controlled studies have shown that fish oil supplementation reduces pruritus (itching) scores in dogs with atopic dermatitis and food allergies. The effect size is moderate — it is not a cure, but it meaningfully reduces symptoms in most dogs who respond. A 2016 systematic review in Veterinary Dermatology concluded that omega-3 supplementation was one of the few dietary interventions with consistent evidence for efficacy in canine allergic disease.

Dose: The effective dose for dogs is typically 75-170mg EPA+DHA per kilogram of body weight per day. Most fish oil supplements for dogs are formulated to deliver this in 1-2 capsules or ml of oil per day. Products vary widely in concentration — check the label for actual EPA/DHA content, not just the total fish oil volume.

Source: Small oily fish — sardines, anchovies, mackerel — are the best source. Larger fish like tuna accumulate more heavy metals. Salmon oil is popular but can vary in concentration. Nordic Naturals and other veterinary-specific brands have more consistent dosing than generic fish oils.

Side effects: Minimal at correct doses. Very high doses can cause digestive upset or affect blood clotting. Discuss with your vet before starting if your dog is on any medications.

Probiotics and the Gut-Skin Axis

The connection between gut health and skin health — the gut-skin axis — is one of the most active areas of research in veterinary dermatology. The idea is that the gut microbiome influences systemic inflammation, and that supporting a healthy gut microbiome can reduce inflammatory responses elsewhere in the body, including the skin.

Evidence: The evidence for probiotics in canine food allergy is promising but less consistent than for omega-3s. Several studies have found that probiotic supplementation reduces pruritus scores and improves skin barrier function in dogs with allergic disease. The most consistent results have been seen with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. However, the evidence base is not yet as robust as for omega-3s, and more large-scale controlled trials are needed.

The most compelling evidence for probiotics in food allergy specifically is in puppies — probiotic supplementation during pregnancy and early life has been shown to reduce the incidence of allergic disease in offspring in some studies, suggesting a role for gut microbiome modulation in allergy prevention.

For managing existing food allergies, probiotics are best considered a supportive intervention rather than a primary treatment.

Strain matters: Not all probiotic strains are the same. Look for products that specify the strain (e.g., Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7) rather than just listing "probiotic blend." Veterinary-specific products have more consistent quality control than generic human probiotics.

Supplements with Emerging but Promising Evidence

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA)

PEA is an endogenous fatty acid that has anti-inflammatory properties. It is thought to work through the PPAR-alpha receptor pathway, reducing the activation of mast cells — the immune cells responsible for histamine release in allergic reactions.

Evidence: Several studies in dogs have found that PEA supplementation reduces pruritus in dogs with allergic skin disease. The effect size is moderate and the evidence is consistent enough that PEA is used by veterinary dermatologists in some countries. It is not yet widely available in the UK but is growing in use.

Dose: Studies have used 10mg/kg body weight once or twice daily. PEA is available as a veterinary supplement in some European markets and increasingly online in the UK.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has immunomodulatory properties — it influences how the immune system behaves. Low vitamin D levels have been associated with more severe allergic disease in dogs, as in humans.

Evidence: The association between low vitamin D and allergy severity is well-documented, but whether vitamin D supplementation improves allergy outcomes is less clear. Some studies have found improvement; others have not. The evidence is not yet strong enough to recommend vitamin D supplementation as a standard part of allergy management, but it is worth checking vitamin D status, particularly in dogs with severe or treatment-resistant disease.

Quercetin

Quercetin is a flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In vitro studies show it stabilises mast cells and reduces histamine release. It is sometimes called "natural antihistamine."

Evidence: There is laboratory evidence for quercetin's anti-inflammatory effects, but no well-controlled clinical trials in dogs with food allergies. It is widely used in holistic and integrative veterinary medicine. Without clinical trial data, it is not possible to make a definitive recommendation, but it is considered low-risk and some dogs appear to benefit.

Dose: Typical supplements provide 200-500mg per day for medium-sized dogs. Human quercetin supplements are sometimes used.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is frequently marketed for skin and coat health in dogs. It contains lauric acid, which has some antimicrobial properties.

Evidence: Coconut oil applied topically can help with dry, flaky skin. There is little evidence that oral coconut oil supplementation meaningfully reduces allergic itching. The medium-chain triglycerides in coconut oil are metabolised differently from long-chain fatty acids, but any benefit for allergic skin disease is theoretical at this point. Not harmful, but not a priority.

Supplements That Are Overhyped

CBD Oil

CBD oil is heavily marketed for anxiety, pain, and allergy symptoms in dogs. The market is booming and the claims are large.

Evidence: The evidence for CBD in canine allergic disease is extremely limited. There are a few preliminary studies suggesting anti-inflammatory effects, but no well-controlled clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for allergy symptoms specifically. The regulatory landscape is also unclear — CBD products vary enormously in quality and concentration. I would not recommend CBD as a primary allergy intervention until the evidence base is stronger.

Colostrum

Bovine colostrum — the first milk produced by cows after birth — is marketed for immune support and gut health in dogs.

Evidence: Colostrum contains immunoglobulins and growth factors. There is some evidence for its use in gut health and in reducing diarrhoea in puppies. For allergic skin disease specifically, the evidence is very limited. Not harmful, but the claims exceed the evidence.

Yucca Schidigera

Yucca extract is sometimes included in pet foods for its anti-inflammatory properties and as a stool odour reducer.

Evidence: Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory effects, but no clinical trials in dogs with food allergies. Not a recommended priority.

How to Approach Supplement Use Safely

Prioritise the evidence. Omega-3 fish oil is the supplement most worth investing in. Everything else is secondary.

Start one supplement at a time. If you add multiple supplements simultaneously and symptoms improve, you will not know which one is working. Give each supplement at least 4-6 weeks before assessing its effect.

Check with your vet first. Some supplements interact with medications. Fish oil has mild anticoagulant effects — important if your dog is on NSAIDs or other blood-thinning medications. Your vet knows your dog's full history.

Buy from reputable brands. The supplement industry is poorly regulated. Products vary enormously in quality, concentration, and purity. Look for brands that do third-party testing and publish certificates of analysis. For fish oil specifically, check that the product has been tested for heavy metals and oxidation.

Factor in the cost. High-quality fish oil is not cheap, particularly for large dogs who need higher doses. Calculate the real cost per month before committing. Cheap fish oils often have low concentrations of EPA/DHA — you end up giving more capsules for less effect.

Treat supplements as complementary. Supplements support symptom management while dietary changes take effect. They do not replace the elimination diet or veterinary treatment.

Can supplements replace a hypoallergenic diet?

No. Supplements manage symptoms; they do not address the underlying immune reaction to specific proteins. Dietary management remains the foundation of food allergy treatment.

Is it worth trying multiple supplements at once?

No — add one at a time and assess after 4-6 weeks. If something is working, you want to know which one it is. If something is not working, you want to be able to rule it out.

My dog is on Apoquel or Cytopoint. Can I still give supplements?

Yes, in most cases. Supplements and pharmaceutical treatments can be used together. Your vet is the right person to confirm this given your dog's specific medication and health history.
