for the 2am scratchers
Year-round scratching, ears that flare up again, paws licked raw. When it isn't fleas and it isn't the pollen, it's usually the bowl - and there's a proper way to find out.
First, the honest bit - when it probably ISN'T food
If the itching is strictly seasonal, that points to pollen. If your dog is untreated for fleas, start there. A food change helps the gut but won't stop an environmental itch - roughly, the more the pattern is year-round with ears, paws and tummy troubles together, the better the odds food is the driver.
Dogs react to the proteins they meet most
A dog's immune system reacts to proteins it has seen repeatedly. Chicken and beef are in almost every food, treat and dental stick sold in the UK - so they're the two most common triggers.
The reaction lives in the skin and gut
That's where most of a dog's immune tissue lives. Which is why a food problem shows up as itching, ear flare-ups and soft poos rather than anything that looks like an 'allergy'.
So switching brands rarely helps
Most 'sensitive' and 'hypoallergenic' bags still run on the same few proteins, processed differently. Same protein, same reaction, new bag.
The textbook elimination diet
Strip back to one novel protein, feed nothing else for 8 weeks, reintroduce one thing at a time. It works - and almost nobody finishes it. One dropped crust resets the clock.
The 'sensitive' bag from the shop
Check the label: if the protein is chicken, beef, lamb or salmon, it's a protein your dog has already met. Lamb was novel in the 90s. It's in everything now.
the plan itself
Switch everything - food and treats - to a single, genuinely novel protein that's nutritionally complete, and hold it for 8 weeks. You're doing the elimination diet, but the food does the discipline for you.
Ours is built on black soldier fly larvae: a complete animal protein no UK dog has a history with, cold pressed, free from chicken, beef, dairy and grain. Genuinely new to the immune system - that's the whole point.
Weeks 1-2
Not much visible - skin runs on a roughly 3-week cycle. Digestion usually settles first: firmer, more regular, less wind.
Weeks 3-5
This is where the night scratching typically eases. Ears calm down. Paw licking drops from constant to occasional.
Weeks 6-8
Coat starts coming back. Now you can honestly judge whether food was the driver.
And you're not carrying the risk: if your dog isn't doing better on it, our guarantee means you get your money back. We'd rather tell you than sell you.
