Which Dog Breeds Are Prone to Skin Allergies?

West Highland White Terriers, Labrador Retrievers, Boxers, Bulldogs, Pugs, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds are among the breeds that recur in canine atopic dermatitis research, but the signal changes by country and study. Other breeds show strong results in one population or for a different skin condition. None of this creates a reliable league table for food allergy: current food-reaction evidence does not establish a unique breed predisposition.

What “prone” should mean
A useful breed-risk claim compares dogs with and without the outcome in a defined population. It tells you how often an outcome was recorded relative to an appropriate reference group. It should name the condition, location, period and evidence source.
A clinic case series can show that a breed appeared among affected dogs. Without knowing how common that breed was in the source population, it cannot show that the breed was unusually likely to be affected. This missing-denominator problem is why an often-repeated breed name is not automatically a risk estimate.

The groups overlap because they answer different questions. Westies and Boxers recur across several atopy sources. French Bulldogs have exact UK evidence for multiple recorded skin and ear outcomes, including a strong fold-disease signal. English Cocker Spaniels demonstrate why one common body-site problem cannot be converted into an allergy claim.
Why breed risk changes between studies
A 2016 systematic review and Australian teaching-hospital analysis used more than 23,000 hospital records, including 722 dogs with atopic dermatitis. It found geographic variation in breed predisposition. A multicentre study of 552 dogs across five sites on three continents also found site differences in predisposition and lesion distribution. (Mazrier et al., 2016; Jaeger et al., 2010)
Differences can reflect genetics, environment, popularity of the breed, referral patterns, access to care and how the outcome was defined. A teaching-hospital population is not the same as first-opinion UK practice. An owner questionnaire is not the same as a veterinarian-verified diagnosis. An insured population from dogs born decades ago is not a forecast for today's individual dog.
The right conclusion is not that breed evidence is useless. It is that the population and outcome belong in the sentence. “Westies recur in higher-risk atopy groups across several populations” is defensible. “Westies are the most allergic dogs” is not.

Breed does not reliably predict food allergy
A critical appraisal of 825 dogs across 22 articles found that several breeds appeared frequently among published cutaneous adverse food reaction cases. The reports generally lacked local breed denominators, so the authors could not establish a reliable unique breed predisposition. Any breed can be affected. (Olivry and Mueller, 2019)
That means there is no evidence-based “Frenchie allergen list”, “Westie allergy food” or universal Labrador ingredient ban. A protein is only novel if the individual dog has not eaten it before. Paws, ears, tummy signs, year-round itch and breed can all contribute to the history, but none confirms food involvement.
When food remains plausible after parasites, infection and other explanations are addressed, the diagnostic route is a controlled elimination diet followed by re-challenge. Improvement on the trial alone is not enough. Blood, hair and saliva tests are not reliable substitutes for diagnosing a food reaction. (Mueller and Unterer, 2018)

- Add time.Note onset, seasons, recurrence, sleep disruption and what changed before the flare.
- List parasite control and previous care.Names, dates and response help your vet separate complications and lookalikes.
- Write the complete diet history.Include food, treats, chews, scraps, supplements and flavoured medicines without assuming food is responsible.
- Take the record to your vet.Ask which cause needs checking first and whether a controlled food trial belongs in the sequence.
