This planner organises a plan agreed with a vet. It does not diagnose food allergy, choose a therapeutic diet or replace care for a dog who is suddenly or seriously unwell.

Build the eight-week calendar

Use the exact diet and permitted essentials already agreed with your vet. This tool does not choose them.

What are you tracking?

What the planner does

  • Turns one start date into eight complete seven-day blocks.
  • Keeps the agreed food, permitted essentials and household rules visible.
  • Saves weekly comparison notes locally and creates a printable vet handoff.

What it never decides

  • Whether food is causing the signs.
  • Which novel-protein or hydrolysed diet is appropriate.
  • Whether to re-challenge, stop medication or delay veterinary care.

The evidence behind the dates

Three numbers worth keeping

8 weeks

The evidence-based minimum to identify more than 90% of responsive dogs in the reviewed population.

Week 5

More than 80% had reached remission, so a dog without a clear change may still need the full trial.

14 days

The observation window after a vet-directed dietary challenge; half of reactions appeared by day five.

These are pooled research findings, not individual forecasts. The full method and diet options belong in the elimination diet guide; this page's job is the calendar.

Questions before you start

How long should a dog elimination diet last?

Plan for at least eight weeks. A critically appraised review found that more than 80% of responsive dogs had reached remission by week five and more than 90% by week eight. Those are group findings, not a promise about an individual dog.

Does this planner choose an elimination diet for my dog?

No. Enter only the diet, medication and permitted extras agreed with your vet. The planner organises dates and check-ins; it does not diagnose a food reaction or select a therapeutic diet.

What if my dog eats something outside the plan?

Record what was eaten and when, then ask your vet whether the trial timing needs to change. Do not silently restart the calendar or assume one slip has no effect.

What happens after the eight weeks?

Take the record back to your vet. A controlled dietary challenge can help confirm a trigger, but it should be planned with the vet. In the reviewed evidence, half of dogs who reacted did so within five days and 90% by day 14.

Some Grub makes dog food. That is why the planner is deliberately brand-blind: it does not identify, select, score or recommend any diet, including ours. Enter only what your vet has agreed.
