Can Dogs Eat Rice? Yes, and Plain Rice Is the Classic Upset-Tummy Food
Yes. Plain boiled rice is safe, gentle and easily digested, which is why vets have recommended chicken-and-rice for recovering stomachs for decades. White rice is the gentler sickbed option; brown rice carries more nutrients and fibre for everyday use. Serve it plain and cooled.
Why it works
Rice is a low-fat, low-fibre, bland carbohydrate, which is exactly what an inflamed gut wants: easy calories that ask nothing of it. That is the entire logic of the classic bland diet, and it remains sound for short recovery periods.
For regular feeding the picture is about balance. Rice on its own is incomplete, so it should stay a component or a treat rather than a meal. Rice allergy in dogs is recognised but uncommon; grain sensitivity in general is rarer than the marketing around grain-free food suggests.
How to serve it safely
- Boiled or steamed plain: no salt, butter, stock cubes (onion and garlic hide there) or sauces.
- For upset stomachs, plain white rice mixed with plain cooked chicken or white fish, in small frequent portions, for a few days at most.
- Cool it properly before serving.
- If tummy trouble lasts beyond 48 hours, or involves blood, repeated vomiting or a flat, miserable dog, skip the rice and see the vet.
