Can Dogs Drink Alcohol? No. Even Everyday Products Can Be Dangerous
No. Beer, wine, spirits and alcohol-containing foods or household products can poison dogs. Alcohol is absorbed quickly and can cause vomiting, poor coordination, low body temperature, low blood sugar, breathing problems, seizures or coma.
Why not
Alcohol depresses the central nervous system. Dogs can become sleepy, disorientated and unsteady, then progress to dangerously slow breathing, low body temperature and metabolic problems in a severe exposure.
It is not only drinks. Fermenting raw yeast dough produces ethanol inside the stomach, and alcohol can also appear in mouthwash, perfume, hand sanitiser, medicines and other household products. Strength and amount vary, so the container is important evidence for your vet.
What to do if your dog has eaten alcohol
- Ring your vet or an emergency vet after any meaningful swallow, a high-strength product, exposure in a small dog, or an amount you cannot confidently account for. Signs can begin quickly.
- Keep the bottle, packaging or recipe. Tell the vet the product strength, rough amount, time of exposure and your dog's weight.
- Do not make your dog sick unless a vet instructs you. An already sleepy or uncoordinated dog can inhale vomit into the lungs.

One small accidental lick is unlikely to poison most dogs, but do not offer more. Ring your vet if your dog drank rather than licked, is small, seems unwell or the amount is uncertain.
What about alcohol-free beer?
Alcohol-free products can still contain a small amount of alcohol and offer no benefit to a dog. Flavourings, sweeteners or other ingredients may add separate risks, so water is the sensible choice.
Is raw bread dough really related to alcohol poisoning?
